Menopause causes lots of symptoms and changes to the body and many women experience menopausal hair changes, let’s find out what they are and what can help.

Menopausal Hair Changes and What Can Help

When going through menopause it can cause thinning hair on your head and thicker hair on your chin and upper lip which is the last thing any woman wants. No woman wants to be a bearded lady!

Thinning hair doesn’t happen to everyone, it’s about 40 – 50% of women around the age of 50 and fewer women experience hair growth on the chin and upper lip around 15% although some unlucky women experience both.

Low Oestrogen Levels

Because of the hormonal changes during menopause, oestrogen and progesterone levels drop and the hair grows slower becoming thinner, this is because it is not in its growth phase (Anagen) as much due to the lack of oestrogen. The body still has the same amounts of testosterone which causes excess hair growth on the chin and upper lip.

What Can Women Use at Home to Help Menopausal Hair Changes?

Removing Excess Facial Hair

Removing excess facial hair at home can be done by various methods.

Waxing can be done at home using facial waxing strips. As well as wax with strips there are peel-off formulas available that don’t require strips and can be used in the microwave.

An epilator pulls the hair out at the roots just like waxing, you can use a standard epilator or one made especially for facial hair. This method is quick, easy and not as messy as waxing. This is my preferred method of hair removal.

Facial Hair Bleach

Bleaching the hair makes it less noticeable and is a pain-free alternative if you don’t like waxing or epilation. It’s important to use bleach made especially for the face, Jolen is a good make. Don’t attempt to use bleach made for lightening hair on the head.

Tweezing is okay for a few strands of hair if you have lots, one of the above methods will be better. It’s always handy to have a pair of tweezers in your make-up bag for any stray hairs.

Shaving is quick and convenient, but the hair soon shows through as stubble because it’s been cut bluntly across. It’s much better to pull hair out at the roots as is done by waxing, tweezing and epilation because the regrowth time is longer and the hair is less noticeable than when it grows back when shaved off.

Hair Removal Cream

Make sure that you use a cream especially for use on the face and always do a patch test first. Hair removal creams use chemicals that can cause an allergic reaction to the skin. Veet & Nair are popular makes.

Increasing Hair Growth on the Head

Below are some of the most popular products to help stimulate hair growth:

Minoxidil is used for the treatment of male-pattern hair loss and can also be used by women.

Minoxidil slows down or stops hair loss. Try using the brand Regaine for Women, it’s readily available to purchase on Amazon and eBay. Regaine is clinically proven to regrow hair in 8 out of 10 women who apply it once a day.

Plantar 39

Plantar 39 is for older hair over 40, the caffeine in this shampoo prevents premature exhaustion of hair growth caused by the impacts of testosterone.

Plantar 39 is available as regular or coloured shampoo and conditioner, which will colour greys with a subtle brown tint. This is a great option if you don’t want to or can’t use chemical hair dyes.

Hair Growth Shampoo and Conditioner by Watermans

Watermans Stimulate hair growth and provide the perfect environment for healthy hair growth and a healthy scalp. One of the main ingredients is caffeine in Waterman’s products. See the reviews for yourself.
