I thought I’d write this post because this happened to my daughter yesterday when she had an accident and fell off her scooter. I might help anyone who’s child has an accident like this in the future.
It was an upsetting day, we set off for school as usual then suddenly I saw my daughter messing around with her hands off the handlebar, the next thing I knew she was on the floor. When I got to her I realised she had smashed both her front teeth.
I could have cried but stopped myself because she was being so brave and I would have upset her by crying.
I quickly contacted the school and rang the dentist for an emergency appointment.
Luckily the gums weren’t too bad, a slight cut lip and a few grazes on her hands and knees.
I cleaned her up gave her some Calpol and a cold compress to reduce any swelling then put the fragments of teeth in an envelope.
It’s fortunate I did that because they used the tooth fragments to do a temporary fix. She had to have an x-ray. Part of the root was exposed in one tooth, we have to hope now that the roots stay alive in the teeth.
She’ll have to have a filling done soon and regular check-ups to see how things are going and will have to eat soft food and not do contact sports for a while.
What do you do if this happens to you?
1 Contact your child’s dentist straight away and state it’s an emergency.
2 Rinse your child’s mouth with water.
3 Put a cold compress on the face to reduce swelling.
4 Pick up the teeth fragments, put them in an envelope and take them with you to the dentist.
What if the whole tooth comes out?
The dentist told me that if the whole tooth came out to put it in milk and get to the dentist asap.
This has been a lesson learned all around. My daughter was fooling about taking her hands off the handlebars and I think she now realises how dangerous it can be and won’t be doing it again in a hurry.
Has this ever happened to you? How did you cope?
