You’ve probably arrived on this site searching for advice on how to grow your eyebrows. Maybe you’ve become too ambitious over the years with plucking and are left with thin sparse brows.
Are you one of those women who wishes she’d never started plucking or waxing?
If like me back in the late ’80s and ’90s it was the latest trend. The problem for a lot of women was that they didn’t grow back properly and they were left with patchy areas that needed pencilling in daily.
Minoxidil
I’ve tried various products on the market without success until I came across an article on the web about a hair growth product called Minoxidil also known as Regaine or Rogaine in the US which is normally used for head hair regrowth.
I read that some women have had success with Minoxidil on the eyebrows. It comes in 2% and 5% strengths, the 5% is usually suggested for men. This is the strength advised for eyebrow regrowth.
I thought I’d try it because Minoxidil is reasonably priced and cheaper than salon treatments. I paid about £10 for one 60 ml bottle, which is a lot more affordable than some of the other eyebrow growth treatments on the market. I thought if it didn’t work then I haven’t lost too much money. You can buy a multipack which is even better value for money.
A word of warning: please be careful when buying minoxidil. Make sure that what you are purchasing is genuine.
Low-cost minoxidil products are available for purchase on Temu. I tested one of the brands, but unfortunately, it was fake and didn’t work. Therefore, I don’t recommend buying from there. While Temu is fine for cheap clothing, it’s not suitable for these types of products
How To Apply
Apply twice daily using a clean cotton bud each time.
A word of warning though there can be side effects as the eye area is sensitive. I haven’t had any side effects, but, they may happen and can include burning, dryness, itchiness, redness and scaling. Applying once a day may help lessen this but I’d advise not to use it if you do react. Do not apply this to the lashes!
I started using Minoxidil on 8th June 2018 and this is how my worst brow looked then:
Let’s look at what it’s like nearly 3 months on:
A big improvement! There has been a lot more growth and I’ve noticed finer hairs growing underneath that haven’t grown in that area for years.
They both still have a way to go but I can see such a difference and will continue to use this product.
Minoxidil has to be used continually for the effects to last. I’ve used half a 60 ml bottle of Kirkland Extra Strength Minoxidil in 3 months, so it does last a long time.
Does Minoxidil Stop Working?
Minoxidil remains effective as long as it’s used regularly. If you discontinue its use, you may see a rapid return of hair loss.
Will it work for you? I’m afraid I can’t answer that you can only try. It may not work for everyone. These are my results.
Please don’t expect immediate results, it takes time to start working. During the growth process, you could tint your eyebrows to give them a fuller look.
Have you tried this or any other product? What kind of results did you get?
Really interesting article! May have to try this as I hate my thinning brows.
Thank you, Jo, I hope it helps. There are so many really expensive products on the market that don’t have any effect. This is the first product that I’ve had any results with.
Excellent info Sue!
I tried Minoxidil 2% for 6 months with no results (other than itchy, peely skin). I switched to 5% and after 8 weeks I do see a few very fine baby hairs in previously bald areas, but the overall appearance of both brows is still pretty patchy. I’ll keep it up for several months just in case, but mine have been overplucked for many years so there may not be hope for me
That’s the thing, overplucking can permanently damage the hair root. My brows were also plucked and experimented on when I did beauty therapy at college years ago, so that didn’t help.
I hope more hair grows through for you. I don’t think anything can bring back full brows, however, new hair growth can improve their appearance and you can just pencil in any other areas.
