I love to read blogs, I read to learn more about blogging, and just for the interesting stories. There’s a lot of advice out there on the internet telling you what you should or shouldn’t do with blogging.
One particular piece of advice I often see is telling new bloggers that they should choose a niche to be successful.
Do you really have to have a niche blog? I’ve asked myself this question in the past.
What is a Niche Blog?
If you don’t know what a niche blog is, it’s basically a blog that focuses on one specific topic to a targeted market.
For example, a niche blog could focus on only travel or just photography.
Why I Didn’t Choose a Niche
When I created this blog I thought long and hard about it and just couldn’t decide on one thing, so I decided to use my own name, that way I wasn’t tied to any one subject.
I’m interested in a lot of things such as making money online, e-commerce, saving money, blogging, WordPress, I’m interested in health and fitness, yoga, beauty, my pets… the list goes on.
I wanted to be free to blog about what I felt like, not tied to one subject. struggling to think about what to write next. So, I chose my own name for my blog and took it from there.
I’m not saying that niche blogs don’t work, they do! I just think that there is too much advice out there pushing you to have a niche when there are plenty of successful bloggers around who blog about a multitude of subjects.
So my advice to you is, please don’t think that you’re going to fail if you don’t have just one niche.
If you can’t decide what to blog about or want the freedom to blog about anything, give your blog a title that won’t narrow you down to one subject, or simply use your own name and feel free to blog about anything.
Later on, why not experiment with niches once your blog is established?
