It’s an adventure unlike any other; when you are first starting to think about the breed of dog you want to get, the trials and tribulations associated with training them, but also the importance of bonding with them on a personal level, you want to give them the best head start in life.

It’s not necessarily an easy thing, especially if you’ve never had a pet before and there is a lot of dog advice out there. But in one respect, we can look at it from a very basic perspective. Dogs have very basic needs, but also there are a few needs that only you can provide…

Their Diet

We can greatly underestimate the impact of a good diet for a dog. While we may think that it’s just about buying any random dog food, but would you buy yourself any random food? Of course, you wouldn’t!

When deciding what to feed dogs, it’s important to find the right brand that’s good quality, but also balanced, not to mention high in protein so they can grow healthily.

There are many brands out there, but Harringtons dog food is one of many brands that have some alternative flavours, like turkey and sweet potato.

Of course, every dog has their own needs and tastes, and it can be a case of trial-and-error. Ensure that you give them an abundance of omega-3 as well, for this will ensure a healthy coat.

Stimulating Them

They are creatures that will give you all the love you need; but in return, you’ve got to make sure that you’re giving them what they need.

They need a lot of stimulation, and if you are out of the house lots, you’d better make sure that you make it up to them. It’s not just about walking a dog twice a day, but it’s about giving them the opportunity to run off that energy, so you can think about purchasing certain toys that will stimulate them, but also make sure they get out.

If you live in a high rise flat, you need to make double the effort to ensure they do get out.

Keeping Them Happy

Just like us, we function better when we’re happier. It all depends on the history of the dog in question, but it’s a combination of diet, stimulation, but also ensuring that they are being challenged enough.

Keep them socialised, train them appropriately, and look after their confidence, and they will forever be your best friend.

Dogs can suffer from blue moods, as we all do, and it’s important for you, as their closest friend, to recognise dog behaviour when they are feeling down. If so, give them a treat, which they will love, but also give them purpose.

If you need to go out for the day, and you can’t take them with you, you need to give them stimulation for their natural instincts can keep them functioning at an optimum level.

Giving your dog the headstart in life they need isn’t complex, but we have to remember that we are the biggest influence in life. Dog welfare is important, look after them, and you will have an amazing relationship for life.
