Acne is a horrible condition to live with and there are various factors that contribute to acne development. Read on to find out what can cause or aggravate acne.

Overproduction of oil: Excess oil known as sebum can clog the pores resulting in breakouts.

Accumulation of dead skin cells: The dead skin cells mix with the sebum and blocks the pores causing acne.

Stress: Stress doesn’t cause acne, but high stress levels can make acne worse. If you can, try to reduce the amount of stress in your life. Yoga is a good form of exercise to take up and it really helps reduce stress and tension.

Tip: Strenuous exercise can make acne worse if you like to do a hard workout always make sure that you have cleansed your face of all sweat and applied your acne medications once you have finished.

Medications: Certain medications, steroids and birth control pills can cause acne (There are birth control pills that can be prescribed to help acne). The drugs Lithium, Dilantin. Micro-K and certain cold medicines containing iodides or bromides can exacerbate acne. Testosterone and anabolic steroids used in treatments or for bodybuilding can cause acne.

Genetics: Acne may run in the family. If your parents suffered from acne, you may develop it too

Hormones: An increase in Androgen during puberty causes the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives also can affect sebum production.

Too Much Sun: Getting a tan, you may think will dry up your acne, the heat of the sun, in fact, causes more sebum production and more sweat, the skin swells, and the pores become clogged.

Climate: Hot humid tropical conditions can make acne worse, just like getting too much sun there is excess sweat, more sebum which has the same effect.

Menstrual Cycle: Commonly women can suffer from breakouts a week or so before their period is due.

Grease and Oil: Acne can flare up where the skin is exposed to oily and greasy substances, for example working as a mechanic or in a kitchen using fry vats.

Touching your face: Touching your face constantly with grubby hands can cause spots to develop. Keep your hands away!
