Jennifer was standing in line to pay for her groceries when she panicked. She couldn’t remember the four-digit pin for her debit card. After trying several combinations, she eventually ran the transaction as a credit and was able to pay without her pin.

Then when she stepped outside, she couldn’t remember where she’d parked her car in the spacious lot. These experiences scared Jennifer and made her worry about her memory. At fifty, she wasn’t sure if these were normal signs of ageing or a concern she should bring up to her doctor.

Why Do You Forget Information?

Having an occasional lapse in memory happens to everyone. You might struggle with little things like recalling why you walked into a room, where you put your car keys, or which 80s group performed the hit song, “Take It on the Run” (REO Speedwagon).

You may have difficulty remembering information due to a lack of sleep, stress, depression, medication side effects, or disorganization. Most people notice that their memory seems to decline around middle age.

What Are You Trying to Remember?

Some things you might be dealing with are normal. For example, it’s not uncommon to mess up your bank balance once in a while or struggle to remember a colleague’s name during your company’s holiday party.

You should only be concerned if you notice other cognitive difficulties. You might find it difficult to follow your favourite recipe. You may even abandon the task halfway through only to find the dishes later. Or you may not remember how to get home from the shop, so you end up lost in a different neighbourhood, uncertain of where you are.

Are There Supplements that Help Memory?

When you notice a slight dip in your memory, you may be looking for ways to slow that decline. While there are no official supplements for slowing age-related memory loss, that doesn’t mean you have to just accept it.

Do You Need to See Your Doctor?

While memory loss can occur for a variety of reasons, it can still be helpful to visit your family physician. Your doctor may ask you if you’re experiencing other symptoms or if you’ve had any recent trauma to your head.

Your doctor will look at your symptoms and make a recommendation. He may advise you to see a neurologist (a doctor who specializes in brain injuries and diseases) for more testing. Or your doctor may tell you that your symptoms are related to normal ageing.

Memory loss can feel scary when it’s happening. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t take positive steps to boost your brain function and protect your neurons.

    I’ve noticed that when we are stressed, our memory is quite shocking. And when we are younger, we just accept forgetting things, but we don’t accept it past 45. We are funny creatures.
